Canoe Avon has a highly regarded Lifeguard section. We work closely with Swim Safety providing cover for local swim events and affiliated to the BCU Lifeguards.
Since 2011 we have provided all the kayak cover and pontoon support for the Bristol Triathlon held in Cumberland Basin in the Bristol docks.
We have a small team that regularly form part of the lifeguard unit at the Weymouth Ironman – 2900 competitors going past in 25 minutes is an amazing sight.
In 2016 we covered a MS fund raising Triathlon event held at Players Golf course and ASA SWR Open Water, Weymouth.
To provide swim safety support at events such as the Bristol Triathlon, Weymouth Ironman or ASA Open Swimming paddlers need to hold a valid SESA [Swim Event Safety Award] certificate.
We also have covered “Come and try it Events” at Bath & West, our own open weekends and 2012 Olympics in Weymouth. To cover “Come and try it Events” a FSRT [Foundation Safety & Rescue Training] is recommended.
There is also a need for land based support for those keen to support but who do not hold the qualifications.
We generally provide free practice sessions in July & August – keep a look out for dates and times.
