If you are new to paddle sports and would like to have a go at canoeing, kayaking or stand-up paddle-boarding, you can either try one of our one-off taster sessions (The Paddle Start Award, approx 1.5 hrs duration) or enroll on one of our beginners courses (The Paddle Discover Award, approx 7 hrs duration).
Please note that no prior experience is necessary for either the the Start or Discover Award and that you do not need to complete the Start Award if you plan to enroll for the Discover Award.
What You Need
For either the Start or Discover Award, you’ll need to wear suitable clothing such as swimming/beach shorts, running trousers / thermal leggings (high wicking, not cotton) depending on water temperature, a running vest / rash vest or long sleeve top (high wicking, not cotton), thermal base layer or old thin fleece if cool. If cool, a lightweight wetsuit would be suitable. Old trainers or preferably water sport shoes are needed for footware (note crocs or flip flops are not suitable). Please being a towel and change of clothing. The club will provide the remainder of equipment necessary such as cagoule, buoyancy aid, helmet, kayak/canoe and paddle.
Start Award Taster Sessions
Taster sessions are open to all ages and are a great way to experience paddle sports for the first time. The Start Award is designed as the your first session on the water, enabling you to learn useful skills for an enjoyable paddling experience. It aims to provide you with the basic knowledge to get in and out of your boat safely, make it move and return to where you started. The Start Award is ideal for those completely new to paddle sports or who’d like to boost their confidence before embarking on the Discover Award.

Discover Award Beginners Course
Our beginners course is aimed to develop your decision making and practical skills for a fun and safe time on the water. You’ll learn how to choose and use equipment effectively, whilst developing an understanding of the factors that affect your paddling. The Discover Award gives you confidence to progress to making your own choices with the Explore Award and/or discipline specific pathways that can be progressed as a member of the club. As with the Start Award no previous experience is required, but we do stipulate a minimum age requirement of 12 years old or currently in year 7 at secondary school because this award (or equivalent) is a minimum entry requirement to join the club.
